It’s Official – Colin Trevorrow Will Be Directing ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

Colin Trevorrow - Star Wars

It’s official – Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow will next be directing Star Wars: Episode IX. While it has been rumored thanks to a scoop by Heroic Hollywood for a few weeks, it’s now official, as the news landed on StarWars.com after first being announced at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. “While production won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow is heading to Lucasfilm this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors.” After Jurassic World setting box office records, he can do pretty much whatever he wants. Interesting to see him make this leap.

Here’s a few of the important quotes from the press release announcing Colin Trevorrow’s attachment:

“Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”

Colin Trevorrow adds: “This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.”

This confirms the set of directors for the new trilogy of Star Wars movies – J.J. Abrams bringing us The Force Awakens this year. Then it’s Rian Johnson helping write the screenplays for Episodes VIII and IX. Johnson will then direct Episode VIII, then he’ll hand over the reigns to Colin Trevorrow direct Episode IX. In the meantime, we’ll have Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story somewhere in between those. As for the next anthology solo movie, that has yet to be determined with Trank’s project falling apart and the Han Solo one being pushed to 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX will conclude the third trilogy of Star Wars movies that begins with Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th this year. Sounds like a plan.
